Food and Drink
Watergate Bay was put on the map as a culinary destination when Fifteen opened at Watergate Bay in 2006. Serving award winning local food in a position overlooking the beach, the restaurant is popular and booking is advised. Watergate Bay also has a beach café and a bar in the hotel, and you will find a number of cosy pubs in the surrounding area.
With Rick Stein’s eateries in Padstow, less than 10 miles up the coast, and some serious competition from the likes of Lewinnick Lodge and the New Harbour Restaurant in Newquay, there are some compelling alternatives.
Family Attractions
Pack the bucket and spade away and head out of Watergate Bay to the numerous attractions in North Cornwall.
Attractions such as The Eden Project (12 miles), The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth (17 miles) and Crealy Adventure Park (6 miles) ensure that there is something for everyone in the area. Even closer are Cornwall’s Crealy, Dairyland Farm World Newquay Zoo and the Lappa Valley Steam Railway, all within 10 miles of Watergate Bay.
Shopping
Watergate Bay could be described as the polar opposite of Oxford Street for retail therapy. Well there is a beach shop on the sand selling bodyboards and beach kit, but you need to venture into Newquay for most supplies where there are supermarkets, national and independent retailers and a tempting range of surf fashion shops.
Head up the coast a few miles to Padstow where there is a great range of individual shops including craft shops, art galleries and locally produced specialist food. Or venture a few miles south to Truro, Cornwall’s county capital for a wider range of outlets.
History and Heritage
Watergate Bay is great place to escape to, but you to find some sites of historical interest you will have to travel out of this small hamlet.
Fortunately there are many notable sites in Cornwall, include Tintagel Castle (25 miles), the legendary birthplace of King Arthur, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre (20 miles), Geevor Tin Mine (35 miles) in West Cornwall, The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro (10 miles), Poldark Mine (20 miles) and Pendennis Castle (25 miles).
Beaches
The beach at Watergate Bay offers everything you could want with 2 miles of sweeping sand, a beach café and shop, and the chance to try some adventure sports.
A few miles along the coast in Newquay, there are 8 beaches, each with their own facilities and characteristics make up an unparalleled choice. Further afield, the North Cornwall coast is blessed with numerous beaches east and west of Watergate Bay, such as Mawgan Porth and Harlyn Bay to the east and Perranporth to the west.

These include Run to Sun in early May, The Midsummer Night Surf in mid-June, Boardmasters on Fistral Beach in early August and Beach Rugby at Lusty Glaze in late August.
Newquay Fish Festival in mid-September also draws visitors down to the harbour.
