Tavistock History

Tavistock has a long and illustrious history. Tavistock was founded over 1000 years ago, when a Benedictine Abbey was built, the ruins of which can still be seen in modern Tavistock. Tavistock has a rich industrial heritage. Though no-longer industrial, Tavistock is a “stannary” town, meaning that Tavistock was able work and trade in tin – mined from the surrounding hills. Probably the most famous Tavistock resident was seafarer Sir Francis Drake, a statue of whom can be found in Tavistock town centre, and who’s birth place is just a short walk from Tavistock itself.
