South Devon
It is no surprise that South Devon, with its sheltered climate, plentiful river estuaries and seaside towns has a long history of tourism. Bordered by Exeter, Dartmoor, Plymouth and the sea, this is one of the most picturesque parts of the county. The sheltered coast, with the scenic estuaries of rivers flowing off Dartmoor, is the focus of the region’s tourist industry. The agricultural inland characterised by rolling hills is quieter but contains some gems such as the capital of alternative culture Totnes.
The coastal resorts on offer in South Devon are diverse. The small towns of Dawlish and Teignmouth just south of Exeter offer an understated and underexploited charm. The ten mile bay stretching between Hope’s Nose and Berry Head is known as Torbay and contains the busy tourist resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Further south west are the rural South Hams containing elegant Dartmouth and pretty Salcombe along with some of the most beautiful beaches in the county.
There is plenty on offer to both families and couples. The South West Coastal Path offers some great walking and fantastic scenery. The sea offers plentiful opportunities to sail, scuba dive or fish. There is no shortage of attractions in the region. Paignton Zoo, Kents Cavern, two steam railways, the Golden Hind and numerous National Trust houses and gardens are just a few of the things on offer.
