North Devon
Stretching from Exmoor to the Cornish border, North Devon is a varied area encompassing England’s highest section of coastline, golden surf beaches, picturesque villages and dramatic wind-lashed rockscapes. Less developed than the south of the county, North Devon is the destination of choice for surfers with the Atlantic Coast offering better conditions than the more sheltered English Channel beaches.
It is an area with some outstanding natural attractions, from the cliffs and moors of Exmoor National Park to Braunton Great Field. Lundy Island, sitting a few miles off its coast and accessible by boat from Ilfracombe, is a haven for aquatic birds and a good spot to watch seals and basking sharks. It is an area of the county best enjoyed on foot, bicycle or horseback.
Visitors to the area have an enormous choice of towns and villages in which to stay: Ilfracombe offers a traditional Victorian resort complete with grand villas, busy centre and harbour; Croyde’s quaint charms and excellent surfing beach sits in an area of outstanding natural interest; Lynton and Lynmouth linked by the Victorian Cliff Railway offer spectacular views across Exmoor; and Bideford’s rich maritime history is revealed in the opulent merchant’s houses that survive to this day.
