Map and Local Area

Situated between Dawlish and Torquay, Teignmouth is an historic old port and traditional seaside town at the estuary of the River Teign. It has the activity of a working port, with large ships, fishing vessels and pleasure craft travelling between sea and estuary.

The seaward side of the town features an elegant crescent of Georgian buildings and a promenade that, alongside the beach, stretches the length of the town and boasts a Victorian pier. The estuary side of the town is a lively place of fishing boats, beach huts and waterside inns, with the village of Shaldon just across the water.

The beach in Teignmouth is a long expanse of golden sand and is the perfect place for the family to spend a day out. Parking is in the centre of town and there are several cafe's and beach huts for snacks and ice creams. The beach is life guarded during the summer months.  Away from the beach but still on the seafront there is a popular children's play area, new adventure golf course, 'The Den' green and multi use games area.

In the centre of town you will find a good selection of high street shops, boutiques, gift shops and the 'Triangle'; the centre of Teignmouth's cafe scene with an excellent delicatessen and some craft shops.

Shopping and eating in Teignmouth

There are plenty of restaurants, cafe's and bars to eat and drink in whilst on holiday in Teignmouth. Why not try The Ship Inn on Teignmouth's Back Beach facing the estuary and enjoy a cool drink whilst watching the world go by, or The Owl and the Pussycat Bistro for some excellent cuisine locally sourced.

From the Back Beach you can catch a foot ferry over to Shaldon.

Each year Teignmouth hosts a Jazz Festival which draws in many locals and visitors to enjoy the talent. A stroller ticket enables you to expose yourself to music you may not have experienced before and with a wide choice of hotels, restaurants and cafes hosting these talented musicians, it's easy to find something to delight the ears and set the foot tapping.

Teignmouth has its own rail station allowing easy access to Exeter and Torbay.

Shaldon

Just across the estuary Shaldon is an attractive village that has retained much of its old world charm and runs at a much slower pace than Teignmouth. As one of the prettiest villages in Devon, remaining as an old English style village, visitors are treated to relaxing pastimes such as bowls. A local gift market takes place on each Wednesday, known as 1785 day, where the locals dress in Georgian costume. In the evening, entertainment changes to Punch and Judy, sometimes an open air play, a juggler, or maybe musicians and dancers.

There are five welcoming pubs that, along with the superb views across the estuary, serve some excellent meals as well as cafes, restaurants and bistros to choose from. There is a good range of local shops including a bakery, general stores, a local butcher and a delicatessen.

A short climb to 'The Ness', a tree topped cliff overlooking the mouth of the river will be rewarded by a magnificent view across to Teignmouth and out to sea. Shaldon Wildlife centre, a small zoo dedicated to conservation also located here.

Beaches include The Ness beach, accessed through an old smugglers tunnel at the top of Shaldon and the main village beach where you can partake in activities such as sailing, fishing, swimming, canoeing and rowing or simply unwind and admire the views. The coast path is easily accessible from both Teignmouth and Shaldon taking you either towards Torquay or Dawlish.

In September South Devon hosts a walking festival with a wide variety of activities taking place. For more information on the festival please see www.southdevonwalkingfestival.co.uk
