Bude and the surrounding area
Bude is one of Cornwall’s traditional holiday destinations dating back to Victorian times. It has grown and developed in harmony with its heritage to provide a modern holiday destination that fulfils the needs of the whole family.
The surrounding countryside to Bude is amongst some of the most picturesque in Cornwall with much of the coastline around Bude designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, whilst the famous Bude Canal is an extraordinary engineering feat of the early 19th century.
Beaches around Bude
With the North Cornwall coast providing some of the finest surfing in the country it is little wonder that Bude and many of its surrounding beaches are popular all year round. These beautiful sandy beaches provide the perfect setting to relax and unwind with friends and family; with most having lifeguard cover over the summer months.
There are eight beaches in and around Bude, and with surfing being high on the agenda for most visitors, here a few that are worth a visit.
Widemouth Bay has over 2 miles of sandy beach at low tide where the wave’s crash and you and the children can enjoy activities such as beachcombing, rock pooling, snorkeling, walking or simply relaxing on the beach.
Crooklets Beach, often called the "Bondi of Britain", provides ideal conditions for surfers with regular surf and life-saving demonstrations throughout the year.
Summerleaze enjoys a huge expanse of clean fine sand at low tide, but the sea can be dangerous, especially near the sailing channels into the Canal.
Crackington Haven is a lovely cove, flanked by fascinating 430ft cliffs it has a fairly large area of sand bordered by low reefs that provide and excellent opportunity for rock pooling.
Northcott Mouth is a beautiful sandy beach which at low tide joins Crooklets Beach. It provides interesting geology and many secluded spots to enjoy peace and quiet.
Duckpool is a romantic little cove framed by the spectacular peak of Steeple Point. This beach is not recommended for swimming.
Unfortunately, dog bans operate at Crooklets, Crackington Haven, and the north beach at Widemouth from Easter to the 1st October.
