Falmouth Holidays - Self Catering Falmouth

Falmouth, Cornwall, is a major town on the south coast. Situated at the mouth of the River Fal, Falmouth has a rich maritime tradition which it maintains to this day due in part to Falmouth’s natural harbour, one of the deepest in the world. The town hosts many sailing events, including playing host to Tall Ships and a regatta during Falmouth Week in August.

Falmouth history

There has been a town at Falmouth for hundreds of years but it was in 1688, when the Royal Mail made Falmouth a packet station for ships to the empire, that the town really started to grow. Fishing and smuggling were important local trades that helped Falmouth grow through the 1700s and early 1800s and then in 1863 the railway reached Falmouth and the town started to prosper as a tourist destination. The railway also reinforced Falmouth’s trading position as it allowed for faster onward transit of goods landed in the port.

Falmouth Regatta

Falmouth week is the largest regatta in the South West. It has a competitive schedule of races yet is great fun and attracts many families to watch the racing in and around Falmouth Bay. The event culminates in a wonderful firework display over Falmouth Harbour.
