Devon
Devon is England’s third largest county and, with two coasts and an expanse of moorland in between, has a variety of attractions to offer any visitor. It is a county with a strong sense of identity and pride in its customs and produce. In the south east of the county are the old textile towns of Axminster, famous for its luxury carpets, and Honiton, known for its lace, along with the county capital and cathedral city of Exeter.
The sheltered south coast is where we find The English Riviera and the South Hams with their seaside resorts, yachting towns and mild climate. The plentiful river estuaries along this coast are the location for many of its most attractive towns and villages. The south coast is also where we find Plymouth with its famous maritime history, excellent attractions and shopping.
Dartmoor National Park lies at the heart of the county. This bleak moorland has another character altogether and is excellent walking and climbing country. Exmoor National Park in the north contains the highest stretch of coastline in the country and sets the tone for the dramatic north coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with its excellent surfing opportunities and beach resorts.
