Dartmouth in Devon is a beautiful town on the banks of the River Dart in the heart of the South Hams.  Dartmouth lies over the water from Kingswear, it’s quieter neighbour, and the two are linked by both passenger and car ferries.

Dartmouth Royal Regatta

Renowned for the Dartmouth Naval College, Dartmouth is also famous for the Dartmouth Royal Regatta which takes place at the end of August when Dartmouth and Kingswear buzz with excitement and the sound of fireworks and the Red Arrows.

Shopping in Dartmouth and Kingswear

The shops in Dartmouth are great for those looking for good quality local crafts.  There is a great delicatessen and fine whiskey shop, or for longer memories take home a painting from one of Dartmouth’s many galleries.

Eating in Dartmouth and Kingswear

There are many restaurants in Dartmouth including Alf Rescos which is famed for its breakfasts.  Kingswear has a good bistro, Zannes, or Dartmouth’s wide selection is only a five minute ferry away.

History of Dartmouth and Kingswear

For the historically minded both Dartmouth and Kingswear have lovely castles, set opposite each other on the river banks and built to defend the town. However, only the larger castle on the Dartmouth side is open to the public. The Dartmouth museum provides an interesting background on Dartmouth and Kingswear’s maritime history.
