Croyde
Eight miles to the west of Barnstape and situated on North Devon’s Golden Coast, Croyde has a unique ambience where village gentility and youth culture exist in unlikely harmony. Sitting alongside a channelled stream, or leat, Croyde’s collection of cosy thatched cottages offer shelter for surfers and families keen to take to the waves at Croyde Bay only half a mile away.
With its backdrop of sandy dunes, the beach here remains unspoilt and has an undeveloped appeal. Croyde shares this unspoilt charm and offers holiday-makers an understated base with facilities including tearooms, cafés and pubs.
It is not just surfers who will find plenty to do in and around Croyde. Baggy Point headland at the top of Croyde Bay is a great spot for walkers and birdwatchers. The countryside in the area is unique. The mudflats of nearly Braunton Burrows are the centre of a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve where the flora and aquatic birdlife are managed according to a sustainable programme of conservation.
