Brixham at nightFurther out from the harbour you’ll find elegant Edwardian villas and stylish waterside apartments. Close by to Brixham are the beautiful South Hams, including Dartmouth, Kingswear and the rugged splendour of Dartmoor.

Brixham is the ancestral home of the trawler, which was invented here in the 19th century. Some of the original vessels, with their distinctive red sails, have been restored and offer short day or evening cruises from the harbour. Holiday pirate fans will be pleased to know every Thursday is Pirate Day and salty seadogs can explore the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship the ‘Golden Hind’, anchored in the harbour.

Brixham remains one of the UK’s busiest fishing ports and boasts a thriving fish market. Sample the ‘Catch of the Day’ on your holiday in the restaurants, cafes and seafood stalls based near the harbour. Those keen to catch their own fish supper can take one of the many mackerel fishing trips on offer during the summer.

Brixham is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in Britain.  During the summer months regular Ghost Walks are full of spooky tales. For those who prefer less paranormal activity on their holidays, there are some stunning coastal walks including the cliff top nature reserve of Berry Head. Alternatively, take the South West Coast Path via Churston to Paignton or from Berry Head try the invigorating walk up and down hills to Kingswear. Whatever the season, Brixham is the perfect self catering holiday destination for the coast lover.
