The small market town of Bridport is not only the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, but also a great base from which to explore the stunning countryside of West Dorset. Bridport was famed for many years as a rope making town, and there is one rope making business still in operation today. The Cobb harbour wall made Lyme Regis famous when it appeared in the film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, starring Meryl Streep in 1981. The town saw huge changes around the time, and its nostalgic charm was re-discovered, and continues to delight those on Lyme Regis holidays.

The fully restored Town Mill watermill, in Lyme Regis, is open all year and offers the chance to see milling demonstrations and a beautiful garden dating back to the seventeenth century. Lyme Regis Museum houses fascinating artefacts detailing the town’s maritime and geographic past, as well as displays inspired by the literary figures that have lived in the town. The museum also operates fossil hunting walks and historical tours through the town - ideal for those on Lyme Regis holidays. Fishing trips operate from The Cobb at Lyme Regis harbour, and anglers can either fish for mackerel in the bay or for a larger range in deeper waters.
